Paternity tests have shown that Kim Hyun Joong is the father of his ex-girlfriend's child, prompting responses from both legal teams and his parents. The issue of custody has yet to be settled.

According to the Korean media outlet TV Report, the paternity tests conducted at Seoul National University prove that the singer-actor is 99.99 percent likely to be the father of his ex-girlfriend's child. The results have been delivered to the Seoul Family Court and were released publicly by the ex-girlfriend, known only as Choi.

For Choi's legal team, the paternity test is a victory.

"My client and Kim Hyun Joong lived together for about two years and she became pregnant five times during that period," said her lawyer Sun Jung Moon.

According to Sun, Kim Hyun Joong repeatedly tried to make his client out to be a liar.

"Kim Hyun Joong held unnecessary press conferences and manipulated the media to make my  client look like a swidler. He will have to show his responsibility for the child, protect his child's mother and apologize for his assassination of Ms. Choi's character."

Kim's lawyer Lee Jae Man reaffirmed that the singer-actor has always planned to take responsibility for the three-month-old boy if the tests proved that the child was his son.

Lee also said that the paternity results will have no effect on Kim's lawsuit against Choi. The lawsuit concerns a claim by Choi that she was pregnant and a physical assault by Kim caused her to miscarry.

"If we don't continue with the lawsuit, Kim Hyun Joong will have to live with the disgrace of being accused of assaulting her for becoming pregnant with his child." said Lee Jae Man.

In 2014, Choi filed four charges of assault against Kim Hyun Joong, eventually dropping three of them. Kim paid a fine in court for the remaining charge. He and Choi also settled out of court. She was paid approximately $500,000 never to discuss the case. The couple reunited after the charges were dropped, vacationed together and then broke up. In January she announced she was pregnant with Kim's child.

In 2015 Choi filed a $1.3 million lawsuit against Kim for psychological damages claiming that she suffered a miscarriage during the 2014 assault. He counter-sued with $1 million, for defamation and to reclaim the funds of the settlement since Choi was discussing the case she had promised not to.

Kim Hyun Joong's parents also spoke up after the paternity test results were released. A statement by Kim Hyun Joong's father Kim Hong Sung hinted at the possibility of a custody dispute.

"We said many times, starting in January, that we would take responsibility but the paternity test was delayed," said Kim Hong Sung. "We are relieved that the results have been revealed however late. We are sorry to the child. We are happy that he is healthy."

However, the issue of custody may still be a matter of contention.

"No matter to whom the custody is given if it is for the best interest of the child, we will follow it," said Kim Hong Sung.

Kim Hyun Joong is currently serving his two-year mandatory military duty in Paju.
