A year after the conclusion of "Business Proposal," Kim Min Gyu returns to the small screen with tvN's newest romantic-comedy series "The Heavenly Idol" with Go Bo Gyeol.

After its long awaited premiere, negative reactions were drawn from fans, referring to the drama as a letdown and here's why.

Kim Min Gyu's 'The Heavenly Idol': Hit Or Miss?

This 2023, Kim Min Gyu returns with his first ever major acting role after a while!

"The Heavenly Idol" marks his first ever work with Go Bo Gyeol, and his first leading role since "Queen: Love and War" in 2020.

The series tells the chaotic romance story of a road manager and a high priest who wakes up in the body of a male idol one way.

In the series, Kim Min Gyu transforms into his first ever two-character role; Pontifex Lembrary, the almighty high priest and Woo Yeon Woo, a charismatic member of the idol group Wild Animal.

The drama premiered on Wednesday, February 15, marking his comeback to prime time. Unfortunately, viewers showed negative reactions to the drama despite Kim Min Gyu's performance.

In 2022, Kim Min Gyu stole the spotlight after he played the trusty secretary of Ahn Hyo Seop in SBS TV's "Business Proposal."

He also boasted his unstoppable chemistry with Seol In Ah, which gained a cult following from all around the world.

According to viewers, "The Heavenly Idol" is a letdown that does not live up to its hype, especially to its predecessor.

During its premiere, the series scored an average nationwide rating of 3%, which is a significantly low record for a pilot episode.

Fans couldn't help but to compare the drama to the success of "Business Proposal," contemplating whether to continue watching it or just drop "The Heavenly Idol" from the get-go.

'The Heavenly Idol' Criticized For Unconventional Themes

Fans believe that the low ratings were not because of the actor's poor performance but because of its unconventional and cringy themes.

Since the plot follows the story of a priest who becomes an idol, Kim Min Gyu needs to show how naive and oblivious his character is, making it difficult to watch for some viewers.

Some of them also think that Go Bo Gyeol is too "animated," which makes the drama cringy.

However, many viewers defend that the drama is just beginning to establish its plot on its pilot week and "The Heavenly Idol" will gradually age like fine wine as it releases more episodes.

On the other hand, "The Heavenly Idol" is scheduled to air its third episode on Wednesday, February 22 at 10:30 p.m. KST on tvN.
