South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his role in the global phenomenon Squid Game was kept so tightly under wraps, not even his mother knew until the series aired.

Lee, who plays the enigmatic "Front Man" in the Netflix smash hit, joined Fallon on June 17 to promote Squid Game Season 3, which debuts on June 27.
The actor, who has appeared in popular Korean cinema as well as Hollywood blockbusters, offered insights into the show's cultural impact, the transformation of his character, and why he chose to keep the role hidden, even from his family.
"Netflix asked me to keep it as a secret, so I didn't say it to anybody, even my close friends and mom," Lee said with a smile. "So, one day, after Squid Game opened, my mom called me and she yelled at me."
Lee, 53, reflected on the unexpected success of the dystopian thriller, noting his initial hesitation.
"When I first read the script, it was a very, very interesting story with a very unique structure, but at the same time it was, uh, too experimental. So I thought, um, either it's going to be a huge hit or a complete flop."
Fallon introduced Lee as a "legend" with over three decades in the industry, highlighting his appearances in Terminator Genisys and The Magnificent Seven.
Lee responded with pride, emphasizing the Korean roots of Squid Game. "This is a Korean story made by a Korean director with Korean actors and Korean language," he said.
During the interview, Fallon asked if a spin-off focusing on the Front Man might be possible. Lee responded, "I'm not certain—but I'd say it's possible."
Lee attended the Squid Game Season 3 premiere on June 18 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, joined by co-star Lee Jung-jae and series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
As anticipation builds for the show's final season, Lee's charisma and candor have only deepened fans' affection.
Season 3 promises high-stakes drama as the series nears its conclusion, with both long-time fans and new viewers tuning in to see what fate awaits the Front Man—and the deadly game itself.
Squid Game Season 3 premieres worldwide June 27 on Netflix.
