Per MK, the event for Coupang Play's new teen drama "Absolute Value of Romance" was held in Seoul on April 14, bringing together director Lee Tae-gon and cast members including Kim Hyang-gi, Kim Jae-hyun, Son Jung-hyuk and Kim Dong-gyu.

This show features romance, fantasy, and humor as the main elements, focusing on a high school student who writes BL stories, which turn out to overlap with reality.

As per DAUM, the story will challenge the standard teen drama plot lines by including a double storyline of reality and fiction.

During the press conference, Cha spoke about his experience working within the BL genre and his approach to portraying his character.

He explained his acting style when addressing the genre directly. "Since I had experience acting in BL, I acted naturally, following my instincts. The script was so solid that I was able to follow the writing well. I acted without feeling confined. The character was very unique and had a fiery side."

Cast and Director Highlight Creative Freedom on Set

The director also expressed his opinion about how to deal with the BL theme in the series. He talked about his developing knowledge of the genre.

"To be honest, I didn't know about the BL genre before, but I found it interesting after looking it up. I also learned that it has a consumer base and a fanbase. It could easily be seen as a subgenre, but I considered BL to be a genre in itself. I directed the scenes to be comedic yet inwardly portray emotional moments where the characters sincerely exchange feelings with each other."

Cast members emphasized the collaborative atmosphere on set, which contributed to the show's tone and storytelling.

Kim Hyang-gi reflected on the group dynamic during filming. "Harmony was crucial because we had to showcase a lot of important elements in the beginning. I liked seeing the four male actors gradually adapt and enjoy themselves."

The director further elaborated on the creative process during production. "Many ideas emerged on set, and with ad-libs added that weren't in the script, the synchronization was so high that it was hard to tell if it was reality or not. The male actors' eyes sparkled even more when filming the BL scenes. The level of immersion was so high that it made me wonder if that sentiment had always existed."

Kim Jae-hyun also shared his experience joining the cast and contributing to the project.

He commented on the working environment among the actors. "I joined late, but the atmosphere was already established. We were free, shared ideas with each other, and created gem-like scenes."

"Absolute Value of Romance" is scheduled for release on April 17, drawing attention for its unconventional premise and genre-blending narrative.
