Bang Woo Ri, the director of the highly loved romance melodrama film "20th Century Girl," dished out her honest thoughts on her first full-length work, the actors in the film and more!
"20th Century Girl" is a Netflix film that follows the story of Kim Yoo Jung, Byun Woo Seok, Noh Yoon Seo and Park Jung Woo's friendship, first loves and life experiences as they grow older.
The film received high praises during its premiere and up until this writing, "20th Century Girl" still generates buzz. Originally, it was written as a biography of the director.
Bang Woo Ri patterned the narrative to her life as a single woman who hangs out with her married friends. One of her friends mentioned her first love which prompted her to pull out her diary from middle school.
Another motivation that caused her to create the movie was the director's love for films. She describes "20th Century Girl" as a youthful film that delivers comfort and healing to young adults of this generation.
Bang Woo Ri Displays Affection For Actress Kim Yoo Jung & Han Hyo Joo
Without the actors that decorated the film, "20th Century Girl" wouldn't be successful.
In the film, Kim Yoo Jung and Han Hyo Joo played the younger and older versions of one another. According to Bang Woo Ri, the casting is non-negotiable.
"They're my pick, I didn't think of anyone else," the director confessed. "Thankfully, they confirmed their participation so I'm really thankful."
Despite Kim Yoo Jung's young age, the actress showed impressive professionalism and performance, which amazed not only the director but the rest of the cast and crew.

Bang Woo Ri also stated that Kim Yoo Jung is such a humble person who never showed indifference among rookie actors despite being a veteran in the television screen.
Bang Woo Ri Explains '20th Century Girl' Bittersweet Ending
The film, which ended with melancholia and regrets, was a success. However, the bittersweet ending truly divided the fans' feelings and reactions.
Director Bang Woo Ri addressed the commotion and revealed that she even received a lot of resentment from it. She reasoned, "First loves are sentimental because they usually don't work out."
She added, "The time you spent with them will never be returned. Like the characters, they are each other's firsts. From the moment they discovered love and heartache, they were together."
"I thought that the actors needed to reunite no matter what for closure to symbolize the end of their youths," Bang Woo Ri said. "That's the concept behind the "I want to see the 21st century with you" line."
The director is also asked whether she will make an alternate ending for the work. Bang Woo Ri answered very vaguely, "I don't think there's a film that can satisfy a viewer but I thank everyone who loved the film."

Rather than creating an alternate ending, Bang Woo Ri is more interested in creating a similar film in which the daily lives of regular people are depicted.
