KBS2 latest Wednesday-Thursday drama, My Girlfriend is the Man, premiered on July 23 with modest nationwide viewership ratings of around 3%.

While these numbers may not stand out, the production team is focused on generating buzz and changing the K-romance scene for a younger audience.

The series, based on the Naver webtoon by Mastar, follows Park Yoon-jae, an astronomy student played by ASTRO's Yoon San-ha.

His relationship takes a turn when his girlfriend, Kim Ji-eun, portrayed by OH MY GIRL's Arin, unexpectedly changes into a man. The male version of Ji-eun, now Kim Ji-hoon, is played by rookie actor Yoo Jung-hoo.

During a press conference on premiere day, the cast expressed their excitement and nerves about taking on such an unusual story. "

It was fresh, and I wanted to take on the challenge," Yoon said, sharing that this is his first leading role. Arin, who is balancing this rom-com with the dark thriller S Line, said, "It's my first time doing a rom-com, so I was both excited and scared."

Former LOONA member Chuu makes her return to acting after a six-year break, playing Kang Min-joo, a popular student with feelings for Yoon-jae.

"I've always dreamed of playing a strong high school character," Chuu shared.

There has been speculation about the show's gender-bending plot, with some suggesting it fits the BL (Boys' Love) category.

Director Yoo Kwan-mo clarified, "This is not a BL drama. It's a fantasy love story that revisits Ji-eun's original identity through flashbacks. The goal is to express young love like a watercolor painting."

Set against famous Seoul locations like Hongdae and Gyeongbokgung, My Girlfriend is the Man emphasizes visual storytelling and emotional nuance.

The team hopes to achieve 10% in ratings but stresses that their main goal is to spark conversation and possibly secure a second season.

As the drama progresses, viewers will see if this unique love story becomes a sleeper hit or just an ambitious experiment.
