Kim Woo Bin and Suzy's latest Netflix drama Genie, Make A Wish has been in hot water on the internet ever since its trailer unveiled a plot most viewers argue disrespects Islam.

The rom-com fantasy features the Genie spirit, portrayed by Kim Woo Bin, who is awakened and has to make three life-altering wishes to Ka Young, portrayed by Suzy. The series debuts Oct. 3 on Netflix.
While Korean viewers initially responded in shock towards the trailer, there was criticism that was increasing in scale once the clip became viral globally on TikTok.

Non-Korean viewers criticized the series for taking advantage of a very delicate religious subject.
In the trailer, Kim Woo Bin's role is shown to be that of Iblis, an Islamic theological figure usually compared to Satan.
To the majority of Muslim audiences, making Iblis a romantic love interest was considered offensive.
One viewer expressed concern by saying, "Iblis? they mocking our religion we Muslims need to stand up and sue them or do whatever we can!!?!?!"
Another chimed in, "Iblis?? Out of all names".
Others noted the seriousness of the matter. A netizen commented, "And her name dajjal or satan?"
Others went so far as to demand that Netflix do something about it. "This shouldn't be on air," one user wrote. "It's crossing a dangerous line.".
The backlash is symptomatic of recent controversies in Korean entertainment, where dramas and movies have been criticized globally for cultural and religious insensitivity.
People believe that, in the age of globalization, writers should be more sensitive towards representation of cultural and religious symbols. In spite of growing criticism, Netflix Korea has kept pushing the series.
The trailer continues to be live on its official platforms and has gained interest and suspense prior to its launch.
One final netizen summarized the simmering mood: "Respecting religion should not be a choice. This drama has already flopped prior to broadcast."
With Make A Wish approaching its premiere date, only time will tell if the backlash will influence the reception of the show or if it will elicit any response from the producers.
